The dynamics of a semiconductor laser diodes can be modelled by integrating the rate equations associated with the carriers and the photons within the optical cavity. The usual approach is to assume a linear dependence of gain with carrier density which ignores the dependence with wavelength. We will use our existing models including many body effects to predict the gain/absorption (optical susceptibility) in the semiconductor as a function of carrier density. This gain information can then be included in the time integration provided suitable interpolation algorithms are used yet still only require modest computer power. We will also include rate equations which describe the energy of the electrons and holes allowing us to obtain the carrier distributions and the associated optical susceptibility. One of the main causes of gain suppression is carrier heating and our model will allow us to quantify this effect. These models will then be used to study wavelength chirp in laser diodes and short pulse propagation in semiconductor amplifiers. Comparisons to simpler rate equation models will be made at each stage of development to assess their validity and to predict commonly used material parameters such as the gain coefficient.
