Summary on Grant Application Form |
Two new routes to the preparation of polynuclear photo-active complexes, containing luminescent metal-polypyridyl chromophores attached to quenching groups, will be developed. The first route involves preparation of polypyridyl ligands bearing peripheral hydrogen-bonding substituents (nucleobases), which will allow preparation of a collection of mononuclear building block complexes with pendant hydrogen bonding substituents. Mixing together appropriate building blocks, bearing complementary H-bonding substituents, will allow assembly of polynuclear species in which inter-component photoinduced energy-transfer and electron-transfer could occur. By appropriate choice of building blocks, the nature of the product is easily controlled. The second route involves preparation of polypyridyl ligands with pendant N/O- or N/S-donor macrocycles. Attachment of a luminophore to the polypyridyl site, and any of a wide variety of quenching metal ions at the macrocycle, will allow easy access to a wide variety of chromophore/quencher systems which again could show inter-component photoinduced energy-transfer and electron-transfer. The electrochemical, spectroscopic and luminescence characteristics of the assemblies will be studied in detail.
