Summary on Grant Application Form |
Many previous HCI studies have shown that interface design choices are important. Good designers make careful choices in designing for the interface display space. There is now a class of interfaces, however, which are designed for one screen display face but which will be accessed and presented by devices-like handheld PCs with much smaller displays than the designer might have anticipated. Previous research indicates that serious interaction problems are likely in these cases. Solutions to these problems are needed if this new technology and associated information markets are to succeed. Our research will develop and test a mechanism for processing the original Web page so that it can be re-presented on a smaller screen. The small screen representation will retain the essential layout characteristics of the original. Our collaborator, Reuters will provide high-value Web content and realistic user requirements. We will use these resources in our usability evaluations. We will compare the effectiveness of adapted pages with that of pages that do not take account of the display reduction.
