Summary on Grant Application Form |
The potential of the RR technique for the detection and quantification of environmentally important gases will be investigated. Metalloporphyrins are to be studied as hosts because they are known to bind the gases of interest, have the very desirable property of good long term stability and are excellent RR scatterers. Maximum sensitivity of a RR sensor with this particular host will be with laser excitation in the blue end of the visible spectrum. The present application is prompted by our desire to exploit the potential of blue diode lasers which are likely to be commercially available soon due to the world wide research efforts for their development. This will enable miniaturisation of the sensor device for commercial use. Initially, simple metalloporphyrins will be investigated using blue excitation from a He-Cd laser. Fine tuning needed to maximise the resonance Raman effect will be achieved by some in-house synthetic modification of the porphyrin platforms. A variety of sample presentation techniques for Raman spectroscopy will be explored including thin films and surface enhancement effects with silver powder and films.
