Summary on Grant Application Form |
An integrated self-contained model of drill-string dynamics based on the Cosserat theory of rods that can accommodate the non-linear interaction between axial, torsional and flexural elastic excitations induced by frictional and other non-linear effects will be constructed. Analytical techniques based on Dirichlet series will be used to explore the asymptotic structure of functional differential equations with proportional time delay that arise naturally in such a model. These techniques will be used to develop reliable and efficient numerical algorithms to explore and asses the reliability of top drive mechanisms employed by drilling companies to control instabilities and suggest enhanced criteria for the detection and control of slip-stick and other self-excited down-hole vibrations. The programme will include the forces and torques produced by a variable off-set centroid of the transverse cross-section of the drill string and extend the analysis by including lateral excitation of the drill-string to explore the onset and control of whirling modes.
