Summary on Grant Application Form
Materials and particles will be made by manipulating the behaviour of two immiscible phases, one of which is a supercritical fluid. Applied pressure will be used to alter the density of the supercritical phase relative to that of the non-critical phase. If the densities are precisely matched, the rate of spontaneous phase separation will be greatly reduced and mechanical stirring will mix the phases very efficiently. Our objectives are (i) to identify the key parameters affecting the mixing of the phases, (ii) to blend polymers and inorganic materials to make new composites and (iii) to investigate the mixing of aqueous and supercritical phases for making small particles.
