Summary on Grant Application Form |
Research will be undertaken into the development of a system which can identify individual gases and gas mixtures using only ultrasonic means. This will be based on using broad-band capacitive ultrasonic transducers to measure the transmission of a wide range of frequencies across the gas under investigation. The results will be used to identify the gas composition and provide a measure of properties such as density and calorific value. Various identification techniques based on knowledge of the system, pattern recognition and neural networks will be investigated. Improved models of the transducers and the gas attentuation mechanisms will be required.
