It has been recognised by the pharmaceutical industry that electrostatic charge on particulate material plays important role in manufacturing transport and delivery of drug aerosols to human respiratory system. Particle charge can contribute to safety hazard in the manufacturing and transport system and it could also be utilised in to enhance drug deposition on specific sties in the human airways. In order to understand the chargability of drug powder particles, it is essential to carry out a fundamental study to ascertain the mechanism by which charge is acquired and where such charges will residue on the particle. In this study Scanning Probe Microscope (SPM) will be used with specially designed probe tips to investigate the distribution of electrostatic potential on particle surface, the electrostatic force between particles and the time dependant dynamics of particle control electrification and decay.
