Summary on Grant Application Form
Downhole catalytic upgrading (hydorconversion) of heavy crude oill by air injection/in situ combustion process (ISC) is to investigated. A new ISC-horizontal well process will place a catalyst bed externally along the whole length of a horizontal producer well located in the oil layer. Importantly, the thermally craked oil contacts the section of catalyst bed immediately ahead of the combustion front essestially in a single-pass operation. This minimises coking of the catalyst, thereby maintaining high reaction conversion. The exploitation of vast heavy oil reserves world-wide (including the North Sea) depends critically on this type of in situ upgrading process to achieve both improved oil recovery and the marketable quality of oil required.
