Summary on Grant Application Form |
It is proposed to study the detailed flow behaviour of liquid metals in very simple filling systems with an attempt to derive simple rules for the design of optimised systems. Proposed techniques include CFD with real-time X-ray radiography of metal flow. The simulations will attempt to take into account not only surface tension but also surface films, whose non-wetting behaviour appears to account for the misleading results from water modelling. These are relatively new and potentially exciting additions to CFD simulations. The long-term target is to provide a background for the eventual development of processes to produce defect-free castings.
