Summary on Grant Application Form |
Polyelectrolyte polymer gel systems can respond to external stimuli such as temperature, electric fields and pH and act as the driving force for mechanical work. The expansion or contraction of the gel will be coupled to structural elements which, preventing free expansion, amplify the response of the gel to external inputs into desired combinations of force and displacement. We address the science behind the mechanical response of turgid plant tissue and coupled deformations in composite structures to provide the basis for novel smart actuator concepts using state of the art polymer gels as model matrices.
