Summary on Grant Application Form
The project aims to explore the novel and potentially unique qualities afforded by direct ion beam deposition (IBD) in the fabrication of advanced thin film magnetic materials. Two material types will be investigated using the new Salford Low Energy Ion Beam System. The first is enhanced magnetisation alloys and the second is multilayer structures that show perpendicular anisotropy and also giant magnetoresistance (GMR). Both of these material types exhibit properties that are fundamentally important and potentially applicable in magnetic sensors such as magnetic recording heads.
