Summary on Grant Application Form
The purpose of the proposed programme is to develop a new 3D measurement technique based on the projection of low coherence interference fringes, to produce a prototype system and to evaluate the use of the system in the vehicle manufacturing industry.A novel method is proposed to eliminate the ambiguity problem in the existing fringe projection based techniques by labelling each fringe with its unique interference fringe order. As a result, the system acquires good versatility and an additional ranging capacity, which is vital in many applications. In addition, two new fringe projector configurations are proposed which facilitate the use of high power, low coherence length laser diodes as the optical source in the projector. This brings the benefits of reduced speckle noise, increased operating distance and better immunity to ambient light. With their compact, robust structure, the stability of the projected interference fringes can also be improved.
