Summary on Grant Application Form |
The experimental group at Glasgow and the theoretical group at Durham have recently demonstrated clear two-dimensional photonic bandgap (PBG) effects in waveguide-based semiconductor microstructures. In this submission we propose further theoretical and experimental development f that work and to explore its potential for application in a variety of photonic devices. In particular, we shall investigate experimentally the nonlinear optical response of a range of 1D-PBG structures. Theoretical simulations will be carried out in parallel, with the intention of developing general approaches which model the range of nonlinear phenomena exhibited by the more complex 2D- and 3D-PBG structures. We also propose to explore the potential of photonic crystals based on Penrose tiling, which could lead to a valuable extension of the parameter ranges and material systems where photonic bandgaps and related phenomena occur.
