Summary on Grant Application Form
New material resonant structures are introduced, by considering dichroic (frequency selective) surfaces printed on a silicon substrate. Their performance characteristics are tuned using a technique by which an optical beam alters the (complex) dielectric properties of the semiconductor substrate. A finite thickness plasma is induced in the substrate by the optical beam. This will effectively switch on or off the frequency response of the structure. The plasma concentration dictated the level of switching. Material polarisation and dichroism are emerging properties of this technique. Temporal formations of arrays are generated by selective illumination or by selectively doping the substrate. Controlling their resonance allows phase changes when inserting these arrays as windows in waveguides, thus producing a leaky wave antenna. The leaky wave beam will be scanned as a function of the light pattern. Aperture efficiency is high with this technique. Due to transverse wave propagation insertion losses are reduced when compared to traditional grid loaded dielectric structures. The research is largely experimental in the frequency range 20-75 GHz. Exhisting computer models will be adapted to accommodate the semiconductor substrate and light illumination.
