Summary on Grant Application Form |
With growing reliance of flexible risers, especially in deep water exploration of hydrocarbons, better understanding of severe slugging is of paramount importance. Severe sluggings in risers could result in liquid slugs of many hundreds of diameters long causing problems in operation and threatening mechanical integrity. The multi-fluids models used in present simulation codes are fundamentally flawed with respect to modelling slug flows. Three mechanisms have been identified, (i.e. bubble penetration, gas blow down and liquid fall back), which play a dominant role in the different modes of severe slugging of an S shaped riser (a generic shape for present and future risers). The three mechanisms will be investigated with some carefully planned low pressure air/water experiments with the objective of development analytical models. Ways of incorporating these phenomena and representation of large slugs will be investigated. As there is lack of data of insufficient quality, it is proposed to carry out tests with pressure up to 15 bars. A high pressure riser rig will be constructed making use of the University's existing three phase facility. These data be used to validate the improved multi-fluid codes.
