Summary on Grant Application Form
Value-based scheduling for real-time systems is currently receiving considerable attention in the real-time research community. Here, all systems services are assumed to have a 'value' to the system if they complete by a specified deadline. Unfortunately (and surprisingly) there is virtually no published work on how the actual values (to be used in the scheduling) are obtained. This project will address the derivation of values. It will consider mode-based value functions and techniques from Measurement Theory and Multiple Criteria Decision Making and other Utility-based theories. It will also examine the trade-offs between the use of static values (that make the scheduling problem tractable) and the need for timing-varying functions for highly dynamic systems.
