Summary on Grant Application Form |
In this project we will research three distinct new types of alignment interface useful for liquid crystal devices but that do not involve Black Art mechanical rubbing. These are 1. PTFE, 2. Photoisomerisable and 3. Photoinductive polymers. Through control of deposition and processing conditions we will control, the surface or nanometric alignment layer fundamental to the operation, efficiency and complexity of liquid crystal devices. Different device configuration will then be fabricated and critically evaluated for linear and non-linear optical applications including displays.
