Summary on Grant Application Form |
Self assembled monolayers (SAMs) are promising materials for molecular recognition, sensors, display devices, etc. However, their applications are limited due to the sparcity of systems capable of forming well-organised self assembled monolayers. We suggest a radical change of approach which will lead to the production of a completely new range of SAMs. We have recently discovered that ultra-clean surfaces provide good substrates onto which complex molecules can be assembled to give stable, crystalline-like monolayers. In order to develop more complex SAMs from a new range of polyfunctional molecules we propose a novel method of depositing these involatile substances onto ultra clean surfaces using a combination of electrospray techniques, mass filter extraction and 'soft-landing' optics. If successful, this will provide a generic route towards more sophisticated SAMs, capable of advanced chemical and optical functions.
