Contamination of the arc by wall and electrode vapour cannot usually be avoided during the operation of high current arc devices. The contamination substantially alters the characteristics of the arc through its effects on the transport and thermodynamic properties and radiation. A quantitative account of the effects of the electrode and wall vapour entrainment into the arc is essential for the prediction of the arc's behaviour.The spatial and temporal distribution of the mass concentration of the electrode and wall vapour will be computed from the relevant concentration equations, which are solved simultaneously with mass, momentum and energy conservation equations and with the appropriate Maxwell's equations. Relevant physics and boundaryconditions together with the properties of the mixtures of SF6 with electrode vapour and wall materials will be coded into the PC based PHOENICS. Emphasis will be given to SF6 switching arcs. The effects of the vapour on thermal and dielectric recovery will be investigated. The predicted pressure within the circuit breaker and the voltage-current characteristics will bve compared with the test results provided by Reyrolle Switchgear Ltd. Finally PC based computer aided design package for circuit breakers will be developed.
