Summary on Grant Application Form |
We have discovered that some of our complexes are efficient living catalysts for polymerisation of methyl methacrylate. We will screen a number of compounds for this type of reactivity and establish trends and mechanistic details to provide a basis for second state catalyst design, synthesis and testing. The U(III) compound [(TREN)U] activates aromatic C-H bonds and also dinitrogen at ambient temperature and pressure. We will undertake appropriate experiments aimed at characterising these and other C-H and small molecule activation reactions with the aim of mediating catalytic reactions. We further propose to prepare a range of U- element double-bond containing complexes via [(TREN)U] and similar and investigate them as reagents for [2+2] cycloadditions, hydrocarbon activation, and metathesis reactions. By virtue of the favourable properties of this system, a full range of physiochemical techniques will be applied in order to characterise kinetic and mechanistic aspects of these reactions.
