The use of the man-made chloroflurocarbon (CFC) is the principle reason leading to depletion of the ozone layer. International agreements, such as the 1987 Montreal Protocol and its later revisions, aim to reduce both the production and consumption of many CFC compounds. Refrigeration and air conditioning systems within buildings are a major application for he CFCs and hence the need to replace them by new environmentally acceptable refrigerants. The effect of using environmentally acceptable refrigerants on the mechanical systems interms of wear, component life cycle and energy consumption is the principal aim of this investigation. New Lubrication regimes, corresponding wear mechanism and frictional behavior will be investigated experimentally. Bench test machines will be utilised with careful attention to correct representation of the mechanical system. A purpose built compressor system will be utilised to study the optimal design solution in terms of wear, friction and energy consumption. Component life-cycle data will be produced via a World Wide Web site. This will ensure that the sustainable design changes are met rather than short-term solutions to the CFC and HCFC problem.
