preliminary work has shown that it may be possible to polymerise a wide range of 1, 1-disubstituted cyclopropanes by living anionic methods. We will seek to optimise the experimental conditions for this process and define the structural limits for the monomers which can be polymerised by this method. We will also explore the opportunities to incorporate these polymers into block co-polymers.Many of the polymers which we can prepare by anionic ring opening polymerisation of cyclopropanes have novel structural features. They are usually rich in functionality, and this simple feature may have useful applications. at least one sub-class of these polymers should have highly predictable secondary structures, with plate-like aromatic systems oriented transversely to an essentially all-anti polymer backbone. We will investigate the consequences of this with respect to developing (a) metal-chelating polymers, (b) polymers whose secondary structure is sensitive to ph, (c) polymers which associate through pi-stacking, or in the presence of metal ions and which may have liquid crystalline properties and (d) electroactivity and conductivity.
