Summary on Grant Application Form
Abstract - The volume of circulated images, for example on the internet, is raising concerns both for the integrity of received images and for the commercial and legal consequences of images piracy. The proposed project aims to acquire new knowledge on human visual detection mechanisms that is applicable to the invention and assessment of emerging digital watermarking systems: a means of indelibly labelling digital images with ownership information for subsequent retrieval without the original image source. Experiments will be devised to measure visual thresholds for the detection of well-defined targets added to digitised natural images of gratings, and modelled in way which is both physiologically-plausible and lends itself to algorithmic implementation in a potential collaboration with industry.
