Both the Vicarious Learner and the EPSRC MNA Distributed Learning Dialogues projects are aimed at understanding how people learn from observing others solving similar problems and how to store, index and retrieve these examples in the most appropriate ways to promote effective learning. The McDonnell Foundation project is aimed at designing a cross-curriculum approach to teaching meaningful, flexible problem-solving through understanding of representations. Dr Catrambone is an expert in both these areas. The proposed research over the four months would centre on the preliminary design and analysis of a curriculum based on key examples of representations in multiple domains. We shall draw on the strength of the principal investigators in the area of graphical and linguistic representations and on the Visiting Fellow in the area of design of materials to maximise generalisation and transfer of problem-solving skills. The result of this unique collaboration will be assessed for effectivements in promoting core skills .We have been working with British Telecom Human Factors Group on distributed multimedia databases for learning in our EPSRC MNA grant. This offers us an excellent opportunity for testing in an industrial training capacity as well as in secondary and university level courses, using materials developed over the summer with input from Dr. Catrambone.
