Adaptive antenna technology is now regarded as a core component in future generation wireless networks. However, despite the numerous collaborative development projects currently underway, no effort has focused towards the application of this technology to small cell operational environments, where such advanced new techniques are most needed in order to help meet the UMTS requirements. Here, it is proposed to investigate the application of this technology to UMTS environments in a comprehensive programme of research. With ray tracing modelling methods emerging as the dominant techniques for site specific propagation assessment and the inherent ability of this approach to support the optimisation of adaptive antenna systems, this proposal builds upon tools already in place at the University of Bristol. By combining these tools with different systems simulators on a Monte Carlo platform, full statistical optimisation can be performed. Thus, the key factors which impact the performance of adaptive antenna systems can be fully appraised, along with the many fundamental issues which remain unanswered, concerning the optimised deployment of such systems. The outcome for this work will have a significant impact on air interface standards of future generation wireless systems.
