The main objective of the proposed project is to continue our experimental study of ways to produce extremely short duration optical pulses (theoretically as short as one or two cycles). Nonlinear behaviour in the short pulse FEL oscillator can exhibit itself in the form of limit-cycle oscillations, the development of multiple pulse structure and superradiance (SR). The previous FELIX experimental runs by the applicant (DAJ) were successful in demonstrating that SR occurs in the FEL for small cavity detunings with an efficiency of more than 5%, much higher than that predicted for the FEL without SR. An understanding of SR in the FEL helps in defining and creating the conditions necessary for achieving even shorter optical pulses than are presently obtained on FELIX (6-cycles), pushing to the single cycle limit.
