Recent experiments at Orsay (France) have shown that one can switch alignment rapidly in thin nematic cells between two bistable states, one uniform planar and the other twisted planar, provide the weak monostable anchoring energies differ and the electric field strength is chosen appropriately. The change from twisted to uniform requires a sufficiently strong field to 'break' the anchoring, but that from uniform to twisted is more subtle requiring a field within a certain range. Physicists at Orsay attribute the latter to induced flow, and preliminary calculations at Strathclyde confirm this. This proposal seeks to obtain a full understanding of these processes using the successful Ericksen-Leslie theory for nematics.
