Summary on Grant Application Form
The research programme consists of a focused design study on a variable reluctance linear actuator capable of operating in ambient temperatures of up to 800 degrees C. The study, which encompasses electromagnetic, thermal and structural aspects of design, will address a number of critical issues for operation at extreme temperatures, viz. insulation and corrosion protection of the conductors, the selection of magnetic materials, linear bearing configurations, the effects of thermal expansion on working airgaps and the large increases in conductor resistivity from room temperature values. The results of the design study, which will include a number of general guidelines for other high temperature electromagnetic devices, will be embodied in a technology demonstrator unit.
