Urban centres, with their concentrated populations and effluent concentrations, have formed the focus for water-borne disease transmission since the emergent conurbation cholera epidemics of the last century. Civil and public health engineering addressed this problem and produced a significant reductions in disease incidence. However, health risks from drinking water and effluent are still perceived and feared by the urban population which experiences outbreaks of water borne disease of microbiological and chemical etiology. Assessing human health risks from waterborne sources in the UK has, to date, been approached through a variety of different often independent methods and empirical sources. The proposed research will adopt a formalised risk assessment method, combining physical and empirical sources. The proposed research will adopt a formalized risk assessment method, combing physical, biological, engineering and social science inputs, to develop a computer based decision support tool to provide a more comprehensive and systematic foundation for water industry policy on chemical and microbiological risk. It will be applied in the context of specific case studies with named water industry collaborators thus ensuring the operational relevance of the work. The wider relevance to city sustainability more generally will sloe be identified.
