Summary on Grant Application Form
The background to this research proposal comes from a desire to understand the processing behaviour of certain industrially important materials, such as detergents and paints. Ideally measurements relating to both processibility and microstructure should be made simultaneously. Here it is proposed to make use of the establishment technology of the Cambridge multipass rheometer to accurately simulate and monitor industrially relevant processing conditions and to integrate into this system a capability to perform on line small andgle X-ray scattering. This will allow the determination of structure on the scale of hundreds to thousands of Angstroms and is particularly useful for multi-component or multi-phase systems where domain structure is critical; this is believed to be the case for the materials desribed below, but is also expected to extend to many other situations in the future. Two commercial systems in which the interaction of processing conditions and structure on the scale measured by small angle scattering have been identified as being suitable for initial investigation. The hardening of detergents asprocessing proceeds is of interest to Procter and Gamble as a means of producing concentrated waashing powders, whilst optical changes in paints as a result of shear is important for ICI Paints.
