Summary on Grant Application Form |
It is established that the critical forces governing the motion of a road vehicles are generated at the tyre to road contact patch. Despite this fact, vehicle control systems such as ABS and ASR currently operate through sensing wheel speed, only, due to the lack of sensors capable of supplying measurements of tyre forces. The aim of the research is to investigate the feasibility of improving the control of a road vehicle through monitoring of the tyre to road contact patch. Modelling and simulation techniques will be used to assess whether measurements of the forces generated at the tyre to ground interface can result in improved control of a road vehicle. Experimental studies with rolling tyres will be used to establish the feasibility of monitoring the tyre to road contact patch via sensors embedded in the tyre. The successful outcome of the research will underpin the development of future vehicle control systems which integrate the actions of the steering and traction/braking subsystems with the aim of, potentially enhancing vehicle safety.
