Summary on Grant Application Form |
With the significant improvement of long lengths PbBi2223 tapes, practical applications such as power cables, grid transformers and motors using these HTS materials are now under serious consideration and a few prototype devices have been demonstrated. One of the key issues regarding the power application of HTS materials in the low ac loss in the superconductor. The proposed research is for a systematic investigation of the important issues, which are the main focus of the current international activities and relevant to the real applications. It will address the HTS specific problems, such as the material anisotropy, granularity, flux creep and the thin tape geometry of the conductors, as well as the application related problems, such as current distribution in power cables and combined action of ac transport current and fields. Through extensive experimental and analytical studies we aim to achieve (1) a further understanding of losses in isolated tapes and in a tape assembly of different configurations in both self and external fields (2) to establish experimental procedures for reliable loss measurements in multilayer cables and ac coils and perform experiments on model devices; and (3) to identify methods for reducing losses by modifying the conductor configuration and device design.
