Computing performance has increased dramatically in the past, and will probably continue to increase in the near future. The performance enhancements have been largely realised in optimising the average case. This has made it virtually impossible to reason about performance, or to predict the performance of systems. Caches are an area of particular concern. they work well on average, but do not have satisfactory performance for large classes of multimedia applications. In these programs various independent activities thrash the cache, resulting in poor performance.In order to use caches effectively,. we want to take a different approach to system design. Instead of the traditional approach of specifying the appellation in purely sequential language, we propose to use elements from the CSP/Occam style of programming. This will allow us to identify independent activities at source level. The compiler and architecture will be adapted so that these activities can execute without interfering with each other, resulting in predictable performance behaviour.
