Summary on Grant Application Form |
The research detailed in this proposal focuses on the requirements of the UK automotive industry for human factors design guidance. The ultimate aim is to provide safer in-vehicle systems and a market advantage through a systematic consideration of driver information processing characteristics. It is widely accepted within the transport telematics community that the piecemeal introduction of individual systems into the vehicle is undesirable and raises concerns regarding the potential for information overload and human error. An integrated systems approach is required to ensure that the method by which information is presented to the driver is soundly based on human factors principles. To date, there is a lack of research which provides practical guidance for the integration of any combination of telematics systems in a modular fashion. The work outlined in this proposal aims to provide manufacturers with advice during the design process to ensure that human factors issues are taken into account. The ultimate aim is to increase the change of a coherent, usable and safe integrated in-vehicle system being provided for the driver.
