Summary on Grant Application Form
It is proposed to research into three different aspects of marine navigation. The first of these involves the current practices of the marine navigation community, in terms of the usage of existing marine charts and maps, both analogue and digital. Many of these are based on historical data, and display a multiplicity of coordinate datums. There also appears to be a complete lack of positional integrity information. It is proposed to research and develop a clear strategy for the establishment, adoption and implementation of a single coordinate datum which will be applicable for all phases of marine navigation, including oceanic, coastal and port operations. To do this, we shall investigate existing and new algorithms for coordinate transformations which will be capable of addressing datum, projection, currency and other sources of error in chart data, in order to make charts compatible with GPS derived positional data. Concurrently, it is proposed to research and develop new procedures and algorithms which will be capable of integrating GPS derived positional information with other navigation measurements (e.g. radar and LORAN-C) for use in enhanced Vessel Traffic Services (VTS) systems. Lastly, we will investigate methods for assessing the integrity of satellite navigation in marine environments.
