Summary on Grant Application Form |
The aim is to develop an enabling technology to allow structures to be fabricated on a nanometric scale over large areas, at a much lower cost than by the present route of direct fabrication. The limits to the fidelity of reproduction of patterns transferred by mechanical means (embossing, casting, moulding and stamping) by dies with critical dimensions down to 10 nm and having aspect ratios up to 10:,1 will be explored. Two demonstrations have been chosen in the area of diffractive optics - moth's eye anti-reflective coating and artificial dielectric lenses for the visual - as they present a challenge to the technology, have large potential market and as their optical performance is strongly related to the fidelity of reproduction.
