Summary on Grant Application Form
We propose a novel microchip laser design which uses a semiconductor, vertical cavity surface emitting laser (VCSEL) as the pump source for a rare-earth doped solid-state crystal. The VCSEL will be bonded to the solid-state crystal to form a fully integrated, hybrid device. The bonding of the pump and emitting lasers will be achieved by the use of an intermediate glass layer. The rare-earth laser cavity will be defined by dielectric mirror coatings on the solid-state crystal. The proposed devices will maintain the simple, direct electrical drive of standard semiconductor lasers while benefiting from the superior spectral characteristics of solid-state lasers. The design also allows great flexibility with different rare-earth dopants being used to achieve a very wide emission range (400-1500nm) while retaining a GaAs based VCSEL as the pump laser. The vertical geometry of the hybrid devices will also allow the fabrication of the laser arrays.
