Simultaneous synchrotron SAXS and rheology experiments will be used to investigate the structure of polymeric gels under shear. Two classes of polymeric gel will be investigated: Firstly, solutions of poly (oxyethylene) -poly (oxybutylene) block copolymers in water and secondly, tapes formed by oligomeric peptides. The former materials will be obtained direct from the manufacturer (Dow) and via a collaboration with Dr C Booth at the University of Manchester and the second via collaboration with the researchers at the SOMS Centre, Leeds. For the copolymer gels, the rheological behaviour will be correlated to the ordered structure (cubic, lamellar or hexagonal micellar phase), and for the peptide gels, rheological anomalies such as a dramatic increase in shear modulus following strong shear flow will be related to gel structure. Such experiments require time-resolved measurements during the shear deformation, and thus a synchrotron source of x-rays. An existing parallel plate rheometer funded by the EPSRC Soft Solids Programme will be used for some of this work. This instrument has been modified for simultaneous x-ray scattering experiments and has proved successful in operation at the SRS. This will be supplemented by a Couette cell that is currently under construction at Leeds for use with more dilute solutions.
