Summary on Grant Application Form |
Chiral molecules adsorbed on surfaces can exhibit new phenomena which arise because the physics of chirality in two dimensions is very different from that in three. For example, chiral molecules on an isotropic surface can show huge intensity differences in second harmonic scattering with respect to right and left circular polarization states and with respect to +45 and -45 degrees linear polarization states which are generated by pure electrical dipole processes. Because such phenomena are of fundamental theoretical and significant practical interest, an instrument is to be constructed for the measurement of these second harmonic circular and linear intensity differences from 1,1-Binaphthol and related molecules on fused silica in order to identify the optimum experimental strategies for the detection of second harmonic optical activity from the plethora of possibilities thereby gaining important new expertise highly relevant for the development of surface specific spectroscopic techniques as a probe of two-dimensional chirality.
