The performance of a porous solid as a selective adsorbent is intimately related to its pore structure. The aim of this is to develop a microporous carbon adsorbent with a highly controlled structure which can be optimised for a particular adsorbent separation. This will be done by synthesising a layered mineral template, impregnating the template with an organic precursor, polymerising and then carbonising the precursor and finally leaching the template to leave the microporous carbon. In this way, it is hoped to combine the advantages of carbon adsorbents (chemical inertness, robustness, hydrophobicity) with something of the selectivity (and in particular the molecular sieving capability) shown by zeolites.As part of the project, a molecular simulation-based method will be developed to predict adsorptive equilibrium in the new adsorbent material, as a function of the pore structure. This method will serve as an adsorbent design tool, to identify the optimal pore structure for an adsorptive separation of interest.
