Summary on Grant Application Form
The research involves both field and laboratory work. A sampling exercise will be carried out at the EPSRC Soft Clay Research Site at Bothkennar, involving the Sherbrooke samples. The standard British piston sampler and a modified piston sampler (simultaneous samples will be taken with the NGI 54mm sampler and with the Japanese Standard Piston sampler). Levels of sample disturbance will be assessed on the basis of laboratory tests carried out on-site, at Imperial College and at Bristol University. Methods of assessing sample quality on-site using a recently developed suction probe and portable bender-element set up, will be examined.High quality Sherbrooke samples taken as part of the sampling exercise will be tested in the resonant column - Hollow cylinder apparatus at Imperial College to measure the anisotropy of strength and stiffness. Data on stiffness will be related to geophysical measurements made by MRE, Surrey University and at Bristol University.
