Summary on Grant Application Form
The goal of the project is the synthesis and characterisation of a range of novel chiral metal containing liquid crystals. The synthesis of ligands based upon aza-macrocycles bearing chiral anisotropic pendant groups will be undertaken. d- and f- block metal ion complexes of these ligands will be prepared and these materials will be assessed for liquid crystalline properties. Materials of two types will be prepared: calamitic systems and bowlic systems. The calamitic complexes are high aspect ratio materials consisting of complexes bearing weakly or strongly coupled mesogenic subunits. The bowlic structures will be cone shaped low-aspect ratio complexes. The source of chiality in these materials is the asymmetric dihydroxylation of mesomorphic alkenes or from naturally occurring amino acids. The materials will be characterised by range of techniques to determine their physiochemical and liquid crystalline properties.
