Summary on Grant Application Form |
The project is concerned with the developments and provision of a computer aided passive facility for training in endoscopic soft tissue surgery. The demonstrator system will be for training in transurethral which an endorscopic based prostate and will have tow phases. The first phase is a laboratory training facility in a camera tracking system to display the tool tip location on a computer screen. A realistic phantom of a prostrate will then be placed in a 'lunch box' trainer, so that its location to show both tool and target can be displayed on the computer screen. The trainee surgeon's performance can be recorded, giving an objective measure of improvements over time. Phase 2 is for a similar system for training on live patients, but the phantom prostate is replaced by the patients prostate, whose size is measured using transurethral ultrasound at the start of the procedure. A u/s 3D model is used as a target against which to compare the cutter position giving visual and audible warnings.
