Summary on Grant Application Form |
We propose a focused study into the simultaneous application of ultrasound to electrolysis systems with the ultimate aim of (industrial and other) process enhancement in organic electrochemistry through the study mechanistic and synthetic aspects of a range of electrosynthetic systems which are either currently viable or may become so under the conditions of insonation. The program is collaborative and draws on the complementary expertise of the two participating groups: Coventry - sonochemistry and synthesis, Oxford - electrochemistry and mechanisms. Sonoelectro synthetic studies will include studies in multiphase media such as emulsions, so as to open up electrolysis of otherwise essentially insoluble materials, functionalisations including nitrations of bio-active molecules and oxygenation reactions. Mechanistic studies will underpin the synthetic systems studied and will additionally address the development of spectroelectrochemical methods for sono-electrochemistry, the initiation of low temperature studies, the exploitation of sonotrodes and cell design. The effects of variable ultrasound frequency will be studied and rationalised.
