Recent worldwide research has highlighted the potential device improvements that can be made by incorporating organic materials into microactivities to make light emitting diodes. We will investigate ways of improving the efficiency of organic microactivity LEDs by minimising both non-radiative and wasted radiative decay. We shall adopt a new approach to these problems, that of microstructuring the microcavity.The basic concept is to remove unwanted modes through the use of periodic microstructure. Metal electron-injecting contacts are used in organic microactivity LEDs, giving large losses to surface plasmon modes. We have already demonstrated that microstructuring metal surfaces leads to blocking of propagation of surface plasmon modes. The project will apply this microstructuring concept to the metal clad microactivity. We will use a similar approach of microstructuring the polymer layer to block guided modes which lead to wasted radiative decay.The use of microstructure to alter the spontaneous emission rate will be investigated. We will study structures which can enhance the spontaneous emission rate, thereby the effect of non-radiative decay processes. We will also investigate inhibition of spontaneous emission by using microstructure to reduce the dimensionality of the guided modes the emission may couple to, important for laser diodes.
