Summary on Grant Application Form
We will investigate the effects of VR displays on the accommodation -vergence system. The proposed programme aims to develop a neural network of the adult accomodation-vergence system and to work back from this to the development of these systems from birth. This model will be used to investigate changes in either architecture or inputs to vergence and accommodation which might result in the development of impairments such as strabismus (eye turns) and amblyopia (lazy eye). In addition, we will train the model on sets of accommodation and vergence cues which mimic those used in VR displays. This will enable us to investigate how the vergence and accommodation systems react to incongruous inputs to vergence and accommodation. We are interested in whether the modelled developing visual system reacts differently to the adult system as a result of its greater plasticity. This is an important issue since VR displays are likely to become commonly available in video arcades. All of the studies proposed will be used to form predictions about vergence and accommodation which will then be tested empirically. It is expected that the combined use of modelling and lab-based studies will advance this field further than either study could individually.
