Summary on Grant Application Form
Many land, sea and air vehicles are now operating into extended lifetimes. The performance of many of the structural materials used in those systems is judged on the basis of mechanical properties determined in experiments carried out in benign environments. Test samples are often small in size, commensurate with the mechanical testing equipment available and standards' specifications. When systems reach the end of their design lifetimes, the performance of the structural materials becomes degraded such that their operational envelopes become unpredictable. The performance of these aged materials, often in complex geometrical shapes and joints, is the subject of this programme that will create a new and novel facility for the experimental modelling of structural materials and components to determine their mechanical characteristics over their lifetime.
