Summary on Grant Application Form |
In the UK, shingle and mixed sand/shingle beaches are common and many recent coastal defence shcemes have incorporated renourished beaches using coarse grained sediments. To improve the design of such schemes there is a clear need to develop and apply new morphodynamic models specifically for coarse grained and mixed beached. The research proposed here is to develop , validate and apply such a model. It will comprise 3 elements; a Boussinesq wave model to accurately represent the intra-wave period motions, a sediment transport module to predict the instantaneous transport rates at all points through the surf zone and a morphology module to integrate the sediment transport movements. The model will be validated against field data and numerical experiments will elucidate the effects of various wave conditions and tidal ranges on the profile development. Finally, output form the intra-wave period model will be parameterised so that its results may be incorporated in existing wave period average morphological models. This proposal will directly improve our knowledge of the short term response of coarse grained and mixed grained beaches to waves and currents. By incorporating the results into a wave period averaged morphodynamic model, the longer term beach evolution will also be better predicted.
