Summary on Grant Application Form
Approximately 1 million tonnes of CKD is generated by the UK cement industry annually, with 10 million tonnes stockpiled. This project aims to establish the feasibility of blending this waste with other materials to produce low-cost binders for the construction industry. Other principal materials to be used in binder formulation will include pulverised fuel-ash (PFA) and Portland cement Clinker (PC clinker), which in combination possess potential for creating suitable chemical conditions for cementitious reactions. The research programme will investigate reaction chemistry and property development of blends containing CKD. As the same time, the programme aims to assess the extent of potential problems that may be experienced with such blends, namely, the release of both heavy metals (which are hazardous to the environment) and alkalis (which lead to unsightly staining). Bringing the findings together, the feasibility of CKD binders will be judged.
